This year, we allowed all of our returning club students to spend all year immersed in independent studies since they already knew the lay of the land in our group. It was really fun to see how some students explored four or five things very in-depth all year while others chose one passion and stuck with it the entire year. Below, check out the gallery of all our final products featured at our end-of-year STEAM Club Showcase including Go Pro with drones, robotics, AR & VR, Rubik's Cube, quilting, sewing, knitting, cooking, art, digital music, 3D printing, clay sculpting, time lapse videos, gallium experiments, erupting volcanoes, stop motion animation, slime experiments and videos, coding, website design, and more.

We were blessed this month to have our local Chamber of Commerce reach out to BTC Bank of Chillicothe and ask them to sponsor a field trip for our group to attend STEM Day at the Capitol. This event wasn't even on our radar, so it was amazing to be gifted this trip two weeks before the event! We had a fantastic day learning about legislative procedures, getting tours of the Capitol, and playing with STEM companies from around Missouri. Two of the girls in our group even made the cover of the Missouri Business magazine. Check it out!
Never in our wildest dreams did we imagine that MU (specifically the MU Partnership for Educational Renewal (MPER) Office) would ask to come create a video about our STEAM Club, but in August, they asked to do just that. It was so much fun for the kids to be part of a real video production and for the group to highlight us in such a generous way! We hope you learn a lot more about us and the impact of our club through this video. In addition, they offered to sponsor this year's club t-shirt, which was so thoughtful of them! While Mrs. Beck and I have had the opportunity to speak about STEAM at national conferences like ISTE, our students have never presented outside of Missouri. Until now! Six students traveled with us to the Innovation Institute (I2) in Springdale, Arkansas, this summer. Our trip was sponsored by several local clubs like Rotary, the Chamber, Kiwanis, and our annual 5K fundraiser. Attendees raved about the students' presentation both in person and on Twitter. The students also enjoyed taking in the fun that Springdale had to offer like the KC Royals' feeder team, the Naturals, baseball game, attending an outdoor art wonderland called Terra Art Studios, and trying their first-ever Japanese steakhouse (sushi included!).
We held a fantastic student showcase in May to show off all of our second-year independent studies. Check them out below including quilt sewing, scarf knitting, guitar songs, clay sculpting, robotics, circuitry, video game design, forensics, Youtube singing channels, Meccanoid robots, website creation, and catapults!
In December, we had the awesome opportunity to take industry tours to Quixotic and Roberts' Tool and Die. Quixotic is an organic tilapia fish farm where we learned about indoor fisheries, maximizing profit, not leaving waste, and more. At Roberts' Tool and Die, we learned how companies make die cuts with half million dollar machines as well as through hand-crafted dies made by artisans. We also got to see women in STEAM fields at Roberts.
We get questioned a lot for our application materials, so here they are:
We're excited to have Mrs. Peoples join us this year as an instructor, so we can expand to include sixth grade. Therefore, we are up to 39 students now -- three from each grade 4th, 5th, and 6th. We spent the first week working with our grade levels to explore three teacher stations about STEAM subjects. Engineering with Legos and famous landmarks with Mrs. Chambers. Solving math brain teasers with Mrs. Beck. And studying aerodynamics with a paper airplane contest with Mrs. Peoples.
The next three weeks, we stayed with our grade levels to explore more STEAM activities including mass, volume, and density through tin foil barges holding pennies with Mrs. Peoples. Multi-step Rube Goldberg machines with Mrs. Beck. And designing art to make the world a happier place with Mrs. Chambers. Because we get the question a lot, we have found funding through the following sources:
